Gold changes slightly; may resume rise

The price of gold in Vietnam rebounded by VND50,000 a tael (1.2 ounces) over the previous day June 23, as international investors’ heavy buying after a sharp correction of 1.9 percent on June 21 boosted the global price.

Domestically, the metal traded at VND28.4 million.

Saigon Jewelry Co, the biggest jeweler in Vietnam, bought gold at VND28.34 million and sold at VND28.39 million as of 12:15 pm local time.

At Sacombank Jewelry Co., the metal was purchased at VND38.34 million and sold at VND28.38 million.

Bullion market returned to muted mood after prices sharply fell yesterday.

Internationally, the precious metal revived from its biggest loss in a month amidst speculation that the US dollar would weaken.

ADB agrees $60 mln loans to help Vietnam improve healthcare

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) said it approved on Tuesday US$60 million in loans for Vietnam to help the country improve its health services.

The lender said the loans are for the Vietnam Health Human Resources Sector Development Program, which is co-financed with an US$11 million grant from the Government of Australia.

ADB said the program gives priorities to poor, remote communities which lack skilled workers and quality health facilities.

“The program will improve health care services for the poor in remote communities by strengthening the capacity of health facilities, training institutions and health workers to serve their special needs,” Sjoerd Postma, senior health specialist in ADB’s Southeast Asia Department, said in Tuesday’s statement.

The bank said a US$30 million program loan will support reforms such as the Law on Examination and Treatment to govern the operation of health facilities and the registration and practice of health professionals; a new plan to upgrade teaching institutions; and the adoption of new models for costing and managing service delivery in district hospitals.

Another US$30 million project loan will support investments linked to planned policy actions in key sector institutions.

Both loans are from ADB's concessional Asian Development Fund.

ADB said it has financed six health projects in Vietnam, but this is the first sector development program.

“The program approach gives ADB an opportunity to support policy reforms with accompanying investments to address critical quality, efficiency and human resource constraints,” the bank said.

The Ministry of Health is the executing agency for the program and associated project, which is expected to be completed by end December 2015.

Vietnam returns to frozen meat imports

The volume of imported frozen meat has now reached ten thousands tons a month. As a result, dirty meat has reappeared.

Vietnamese importers stopped importing meat in the last months of 2008 and in 2009 due to discoveries of dirty meat. Now they have resumed the practice

According to the Livestock Breeding Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), in the first five months of 2010, frozen meat imports (poultry and meats) increased by three times over the last months of 2009. Pork imports alone have reached 50,000 tons.

According to the Animal Health Agency Zone 4, the agency receives quality inspection requests for 4000-5000 tons of imported meat every month. The figure soared to 7000 tons in April and May.

Meat traders say that, in HCM City, some 500 containers of meat (20-30 tons per container) are arriving at ports nationwide carrying poultry, pork, beef and lamb.

Nguoi Lao Dong reported that imported meat prices are not very low. Chicken legs are 20,000 dong per kilo, allowing importers to make fat profits if they sell at 22,000-24,000 dong per kilo (lower by ten thousand dong than domestic products).

Wholesale frozen pork imports run 35,000-40,000 dong per kilo, 50 percent cheaper than domestic prices. The low rates explain why imports are selling very well. Previously, domestic food processors made products from domestic pork, but now they are using imports to reduce production costs.

The trend is worrisome. Enterprises import products that are nearly out of date and accept the risks. If products obtain customs clearance, they will get fat profit from the low import prices. If the products cannot be cleared because of hygiene problems, they can accept the loss because they only pay a deposit of 20 percent of the consignment’s value to the exporter

Nguyen Xuan Binh, Director of Animal Health Agency Zone 6, admitted that his agency finds one or two containers of meat each month that cannot meet food hygiene requirements. In the first days of June alone, three containers were turned away for containing “dirty meat.”

Why import so much meat? Government agencies believe that Vietnamese enterprises stepped up imports to offset the meat shortage caused by the blue ear epidemic. Food traders assert that it is the cheap prices. Poultry in the world market, for example, declined from $1000 to $800 per ton.

Other analysts argue that the massive imports have been caused by a new MARD document on required food hygiene, which will take effect July 1. Businesses think that they need to import meat beforehand to avoid the stricter examinations.

Football: USA win Group C, England also advance

England and the United States qualified for the last 16 of the World Cup from Group C on Wednesday, but the US won the group with a last-gasp 1-0 victory over Algeria.

A volley from Jermain Defoe gave England a hard-fought 1-0 win over Slovenia, but the the United States pipped England to the top spot when Landon Donovan scored one minute into stoppage time.

Until then, Slovenia had been on course to qualify with England, but Donovan's goal crushed their hopes and left the Americans top of the group by virtue of having scored four goals to England's two.

It means England's opponents in the last 16 could be Germany, who face a battle to finish top of Group D later Wednesday.

In Port Elizabeth, Defoe volleyed England into the lead from a pinpoint James Milner cross in the 23rd minute.

In the second half, Slovenia goalkeeper Samir Handanovic had to be sharp to save from a powerful John Terry header.

Wayne Rooney hit the post after Handanoviuc got his fingertips to the England striker's shot, but he was later substituted to make way for Joe Cole as England tried to play more defensively.

In Pretoria, watched by former US president Bill Clinton, the United States poached victory after wasting a number of chances.

Algeria were first to threaten when Rafik Djebbour crashed a shot off the crossbar in the fifth minute.

Clint Dempsey had the ball in the net but it was disallowed for offside in what appeared a debatable decision - not the first time the Americans have had a goal ruled out in the tournament.

Jozy Altidore blasted over the crossbar from just yards away, his shocked reaction speaking volumes.

And Dempsey hit the post in the 57th minute and fluffed the rebound.

But Donovan popped up to complete the victory, firing home a rebound from Jozy Altidore's saved shot, sending the American bench into joyous celebrations.

World Cup causes business woes and hopes

The World Cup is a prosperous business opportunity for popular coffee shops and restaurants but it’s a nightmare for the entertainment business and luxury dining in Ho Chi Minh City.

Local coffee shops and restaurants continue to be the first choice for World Cup fans to watch matches

This Karaoke spot is usually busy at this time, but sits empty

Initially, expensive coffee shops and restaurants attracted an abundance of customers thanks to their advanced LCD TVs or big-screen projectors. However, football fans have swiftly changed their watching location to more affordable coffee shops and restaurants, which are situated on sidewalks.

Ho Van Tinh, living on Doc Lap Road, Tan Phu District, Ho Chi Minh City, and his friends often watched early matches at big coffee shops or in big restaurants. But after some time passed, they now gather at street stalls to watch the game.

“We were charged nearly half a million dong per night at fancy restaurants. We cannot afford that much money throughout the World Cup,” shared Tinh.

Currently, expensive coffee shops and restaurants have very few customers during football matches. Meanwhile, the street stalls and local coffee shops seem to be enjoying a plethora of customers.

Bay, owner of a popular restaurant on Co Bac Road, Phu Nhuan District, Ho Chi Minh City said, “My customers are increasing more and more. There is no space at my restaurant during matches despite the fact that we have an old-fashioned TV.”

“I serve over 200 coffee glasses per night, excluding other kinds of drinks. My profits have doubled,” said Hoang Thi Anh, owner of a small coffee shop on Nguyen Thai Son Road.

Most of her customers were students or motorbike taxi drivers during the first matches, but now, civil servants and businessman come to her boutique to watch World Cup matches.

“A cup of coffee cost me about VND20,000-30,000 ($1.05-1.57) at big coffee shops but I have to pay only VND6,000 ($0.3) for a glass at small ones. At expensive coffee shops there are big screens but here I can shout out for encouragement or relax myself by putting my legs on the chair,” shared Trieu, who works at a bank.

In contrast, the usually busy and more pricey spots often popular at night such as cinemas, karaokes, billiard halls or gaming stations have their fewest amount of customers yet this year. They receive very few customers during the day and during World Cup matches they have virtually no customers.

“The number of customers has reduced by half. We always have vacant rooms and we have free time to watch World Cup.” said Ngoc, an employee of at a large karaoke on Hoang Van Thu Road.”

Thinh, owner of a billiards hall on Le Duc Tho Road, Go Vap District, in Ho Chi Minh City complained, “There are basically no customers. Traditionally, I have a lot of customers during summers but they are all watching the World Cup. My tables are empty and my staff outnumbers my customers since the World Cup started. Business is very bad.”

Maradona calls for fair play after Messi marking

messi 420
Greece's Giorgos Karagounis (L) argues with Argentina's Lionel Messi (R) during a 2010 World Cup Group B soccer match at Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane June 22, 2010

Diego Maradona asked where was fair play at the World Cup after Lionel Messi was treated to systematic fouling by Greece in Argentina’s 2-0 win on Tuesday.

“The famous fair play doesn’t exist (here), let’s make it effective once and for all,” Maradona said.

“Because if each time Messi gets the ball they bring him down, what are we playing at?” he asked at the post-match news conference.

“After repeated fouls, take out the yellow card to the third (player) who hits Messi, and you’ll see that defenders don’t hit him any more.

“Why didn’t the referee do that? It’s in the regulations, man.”

Maradona had a rant at what he saw as repeated foul throw-ins by the Greeks and said his complaint to the fourth official had fallen on deaf ears.

Argentina’s coach also launched into a heartfelt defense of his players who have won their three matches in the group, including Tuesday’s with a largely reserve side.

He said the media who had criticized the team and players during the qualifiers when things were not going well for his team should apologize.

“Everything a lot of you said, you were wrong… (and) you even showed a lack of respect for these players… (and) should apologize to these players because they give everything on the pitch, because they are 100 percent professional,” he said.

“These same players were in the qualifiers and anybody can make a mistake but I’d love it for those on the other side to say sorry.”

Maradona was suspended by FIFA for two months last year for a foul-mouthed rant at reporters on the night his team secured their place at the finals.

He and the players were the butt of strong criticism for poor results that nearly ended in Argentina missing the finals for the first time since 1970.
